P.S. 209 in the Bronx is closed until next Monday after an unusually-high number of students reported flu-like symptoms.

Assemblyman Nelson Castro, who was at the school this morning, says by the end of the school day yesterday, there were 46 kids reporting flu-like symptoms.

"When I was here yesterday, a woman came in and said her son had a fever of 106 degrees. It started on Friday and persisted over the weekend," said Castro. "She just came down to find out what was happening at the school "

Only 32 out of 241 students showed up on Friday, and 116 were absent yesterday.

"We're actually glad that the school's closed finally, 209, and we're still getting calls from parents, you know, talking about their kids being sick and they're going to stay home, but you know the school's closed anyway," Castro said.

So far, there have been no reports of confirmed cases of H1N1 at the school.

Parents said they are relieved the school is closed, as some have been pushing to close the school for a week.

"If the kids are sick, they shouldn't be in a building. All we want is for them to clean and sanitize the building," said Louella Hatch, the grandmother of one of the students.

"This is basically what we wanted all along, just to make sure that all the services and everything were clean because they had so many kids out with flu-like symptoms," said one parent.

"These are our children and they are precious and we want the same rights that they have to close the schools down and wash them down in Queens," said another.

School officials urged parents to keep their children at home this week and not let them go out with friends to prevent further spread of disease. They also urged parents and students to keep up with schoolwork online until school reopens.

Meanwhile, P.S. 161 in Manhattan reopened today, and other schools are expected to reopen throughout the week.
