Cooling off with a frozen treat could leave you with hundreds of calories to burn. NY1's Shazia Khan filed the following report. A frozen treat may sound refreshing, but it could end up packing more calories than your lunch and dinner put together.
"You can rack up over 1,000 calories with just one drink, so you have to make sure you are making a right choice when you go to the store," says Frances Largeman-Roth, senior editor at Health Magazine.
Largeman-Roth says there are a number of less-fattening, low-calorie options out there, even at fast-food restaurants like Wendy's. There, a vanilla Junior Frosty is 150 calories and four grams of fat.
When it comes to smoothies, Largeman-Roth warns that just because it has fruit in it, doesn't mean it's healthy.
"Sometimes those frozen fruit drinks aren't made with real fruit or they are made with real fruit but also a lot of added sugars, so you have to be careful with those as well," she says. "It's not necessarily healthy just because it has fruit juice in it. So if you go to Jamba Juice, go for their Berry Fulfilling; it's the light smoothie and it has 160 calories."
The McDonald's reduced-fat vanilla ice cream cone is one calorie-conscious item; it has 150 calories and 3.5 grams of fat.
Those looking for more flavors have scoops of light choices at Baskin Robbins.
"At Baskin Robbins, they have a whole new light menu," says Largeman-Roth. "And we really love their Mint Oreo light ice cream. It's only 150 calories and 4.5 grams of fat [for a 2.5 ounce serving.]"
If cold coffee is what you crave, the Dunkin' Donuts small Coffee Coolata with skim milk is 140 calories and no grams of fat.
Over at Starbucks, you might want to sip their light mocha Frappuccino.
"It's only 110 calories. They do use Splenda, that's how they reduce the calories, but if you love that traditional flavor of the Frappuccinos, it's a great way to do it light," says Largeman-Roth.
Finally, let the cherry on top be only a cherry, and don't go overboard with toppings that can serve up costly calories.
