The New York City Department of Health is warning doctors to be on the lookout for measles.
The DOH is urging doctors to report any suspected cases, after 11 cases of measles surfaced in Brooklyn the past two months. Nearly all of them occurred in children who were not vaccinated.
Measles is not common in the city, but is highly contagious.
Symptoms include fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red eyes, with more serious cases potentially leading to diarrhea, ear infection or pneumonia.
The DOH says children should be vaccinated against the virus when they turn one year old, and again between the ages of four and six.
