He's gained international fame as Harry Potter, but for young British film star Daniel Radcliffe, the Great White Way is pretty thrilling, too.
"To do Broadway, you know, not everyone gets that opportunity," said Radcliffe. "It's a pretty big deal."
Radcliffe is currently playing Alan Strang, the troubled boy who blinds six horses, in the revival of Peter Shaffer's "Equus."
This production first opened in London in 2007 with Radcliffe playing opposite his "Harry Potter" co-star Richard Griffiths. Both actors made the transfer when the show arrived in New York City this fall.
But while Griffiths is no stranger to Broadway, he won a Tony Award for his work in "The History Boys" in 2006, Radcliffe is making his Broadway debut.
Radcliffe says his film work has prepared him for doing eight shows a week.
"I think that's actually where my film training has come in very handy, because you have to do 20-30 takes sometimes on a very bad day," he said. "And when you're doing the same thing over and over, you have to make it good every time. And I think that's where I have been able to draw from that, to just recreate it every night."
Radcliffe says he is enjoying the warm welcome he's found here on this side of the pond.
"Nothing against the London community at all and maybe this is just my experience of it, but when I was in London, we didn't once go out with members of any of the other companies," he said. "We just didn't. Here we've been going out with 'The Seagull.' We met up with 'Black Watch.' We've seen all the guys from 'Gypsy.' There's a really, really close community here and you hear a lot about it. But it is, it's astonishing. Every show is excited to have you here. It really is fantastic!"
"Equus" is playing a limited engagement through February 8th. So with one heavy drama under his belt, will Radcliffe come back for more?
"I would love to! It's a long time before I can do a musical," he said. "I am taking singing lessons at the moment, but I want to get much better before I feel comfortable. But that's doable. I'd love to do a musical. I would absolutely love to come back to Broadway and do another play or a musical. I love it here."
For now, it's back to familiar territory. Radcliffe begins shooting "Harry Potter 7" on February 15th.
