The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York offers a fun, fall vacation perfect for wine lovers. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

Mulling a fall getaway within driving distance, but can't exactly put your finger on it? Try a trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York State.

Especially this time of the year, in New York's Finger Lakes region, the scenery sparkles as clearly as the wine. The leaves are blushing the first tinges of autumn, while the other colors, the reds and the whites are ready for harvest.

One of the largest tourism regions in the state covering 9,000 square miles, the Finger Lakes area is named for 11 thin glacial lakes that dangle southward toward the Pennsylvania border from Lake Ontario like fingers pressing into a giant handprint.

Five hours driving distance from Manhattan, the region spans 14 counties, and is home to more than 100 wineries, where vines have been growing since 1860.

Seneca Lake is the largest at 38 miles long, and with a depth of 600 feet it never freezes, so it moderates the climate and allows a variety of grapes to grow near the water.

"Keeps it warmer in the fall and winter and cooler in the spring. So the vines don't get ahead of themselves," said Steve DiFrancesco of Glenora Wine Cellars.

Glenora is one of the leading wine cellars along Seneca Lake, and has an adjoining inn and a restaurant that pairs each course with a local wine.

Also in the area are specialty wineries such as Miles, which is not only dog-friendly, but ghost-friendly. This haunted winery has a bottle of spooky spirits, especially popular for Halloween.

The Pompous Ass Winery has such an irreverent sense of humor that it carries an undeniable message in a bottle.

The Finger Lakes region is dotted with hundreds of inns and B&Bs ranging from the Savannah House, a restored motel, to The Edge of Thyme, a gracious Georgian home.

Now here's a D'Elia's Deal you don't want to miss at the Edge Of Thyme Bed & Breakfast. Stay two nights and get the third night free when you tell them Val sent you.
