New York City's unemployment rate is worse than the national average, according to the latest numbers released Thursday by the State Labor Department.

The city's unemployment rose to 9.6 percent in July. That's up from 9.4 percent the month before. It's the highest unemployment rate in New York City in 12 years.

The national unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent last month from 9.5 percent in June.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits for the first time, however, rose unexpectedly for the second week in a row.

New York State as a whole is faring better with unemployment falling a tenth of a point to 8.6 percent.

That's the first month-to-month decrease in a year.
